As dawn broke, the ARVN were ordered to advance on the sleepy town. Hearing the distant thrum of helicopter blades, the sniper team went to work. When the Viet Cong soldiers were ordered to their defensive positions, they were met with the snipers’ barrage. Twelve VC were killed or seriously wounded before the main battle had begun. Granier was responsible for four, all kills.

More concerned about the approaching helicopters, the Viet Cong did not detect the snipers’ positions and the killing of VC continued throughout the battle. In many cases it was a turkey shoot with one VC shot as he moved toward a position, then another when the position was found unoccupied. The snipers did not overshoot revealing their hidden positions but instead waited until their targets were in the clear before firing. One bullet, one kill.
